Perl has been my langage of choice on a great variety of UNIX systems and two or three generations of Macintosh. It's the fastest way of whipping out quick-and-dirty code, usually to prototype (or for a short-term project). Perl does so much for you behind the scenes that it's easy to concentrate on the actual programming at hand.
In some ways I prefer Java, but Perl is quicker to develop and deploy.

mac2unix is how I convert Mac OS files to UNIX; the end-of-line markers are different.
