Desktop managers

Linux users have an embarassment of riches when it comes to desktop managers. GNOME and KDE are both leading the way towards a usable desktop environment for UNIX. I suggest you try each and then decide.

My Linux shipped with GNOME as the default desktop manager, but I found I liked KDE better. How to make the choice stick?"

1. Find the switchdesk RPMs on the distribution (or obtain them on the net).

2. Use rpm to install the switchdesk RPM.

3. Run switchdesk.

Type rehash to have the newly-installed program be noted. (Logging out and back in would do the same thing.) Then type switchdesk. You should see something like the following window:

switchdesk

Future sessions should honor the default you've chosen.
