Mac OS X: Enabling the Root User

In the Mac OS X Public Beta it was possible to become the root user (in the Terminal application). In the release version the su command will always be rejected, until you follow this one-time configuration:

  1. Run (double-click) Applications / Utilities / Netinfo Manager

  2. [menubar] Domain / Security / Authenticate - provide a root user (I used my default loginname)

  3. [menubar] Domain / Security / Enable Root User - provide a non-trivial password
