BMW

bimmer beemer
Bimmer Beemer

In the same way as riders of the British BSA - Birmingham Small Arms - motorcycles referred to their mounts as Beezers, riders of the German BMW - Bayerische Motoren Werke - motorcycles called theirs Beemers. Bimmer seems to have come into use as BMW automobiles became popular, although why an alternative to Beemer was needed seems to have been lost in the mists of antiquity.

Some folks do, in fact, refer to BMW cars as Beemers, but members of the Cult of the BMW are very deliberate in calling the cars Bimmers and the motorcycles Beemers, just as residents of San Francisco never, ever call it Frisco, leaving that to the tourists.

And such was my initiation into the arcane pedantry surrounding the products of BMW Bayerische Motoren Werke AG (Bavarian Motor Works Ltd). It's been fun.

Have you found errors nontrivial or marginal, factual, analytical and illogical, arithmetical, temporal, or even typographical? Please let me know; drop me email. Thanks!
