Burning Man 1994

We were burned by fire and sun, swept by dust, soaked in hot springs mud pools, carried away by cosmic energy, danced for unimaginable lengths of time and had an ecstatic affair with nature.

Just about an hour ago, 2100 Pacific Time on Labor Day, Monday 5 September 1994, videographers with MONK magazine sent footage from the Burning Man festival in the desert near Reno, Nevada to a satellite (at $10 per minute) and onto the Internet, where I was watching at home via a 14,400 kbps SLIP connection via CU-SeeMe. In the photo gallery you'll see that MONK's headquarters, the bus, is caught in the glare of the bonfire. Can you see the toll-free phone number for MONK magazine painted on the side of the bus?

Alfredo Lusa sent out a press release that day:

Second Live Video Party Extravaganza from MONK, the only mobile magazine on this side of the Universe!

Not content with our first huge success, we will now attempt a more daring enterprise: we will broadcast live to the internet the Burning Man!

The event will take place on the remote, vision-inducing playa of the Nevada desert (about 100 miles north of Reno - 7 hours drive from San Francisco) throughout Labor Day Weekend (September 2-5). Burning Man is a ragtag assemblage of neo-pagans, ravers, hippies and lawyers that culminates in the ritual torching of a four-story-high figure made of wood and glass! (expected attendance 2500 people)
