Burning Man 1996: Merchant Camp

Here's a bit of my stroll around Merchant Camp (which in later years is called Center Camp).

It's most impressive what people will don in a hot, sweaty environment. Or they have better showers than we do.

We had a steady stream of entertainment: live music, improv dance, and here you see a kilt-clad poet.

A nude server at the café. I'd be too nervous around vats of very hot beverages...

...but I'm glad she's okay with it all. I like the hat too, and the hat of the guy in the background. It's hot, but we're doing a great job of surviving.

Here's a bunch of participants just sitting around, staying out of the hot mid-day sun. A good chunk of Rangering is asking folks whether they've been drinking enough water and used enough sunscreen. It's often the little things which count.

I don't know why I included this picture. Mea culpa. Note that she's got a sprayer bottle, which is a great way of keeping yourself and your friends nice and cool.

My time in Merchant Camp is about over, and my next shift is taking place on the open playa. I head back for another glass of hot chai. Absolutely nothing makes a patrol go better than a hot liquids. Thank you very, very much, café staff!

As I'm leaving I pass this woman muttering about the long lines for coffee. It's worth it, especially when you're heading out to see the Man.
