Burning Man 1996: The Obelisk
Here we're looking away from Merchant Cam towards the Man while standing on the Esplanade. The art installation on the walkway is the Obelisk of Books.
![]() Looking something like a pagoda with a base of books and dirt, this was a must-visit stop for the participants. A lot of speculative conversation was started by the blending of permanence and flammability :-)
![]() Another view, this time looking back towards camp. I can't remember if the translucent "fishtank" was filled with gasoline, or that was just my impression. Note the base made of playa bud, cracking as the soaking material is dried.
![]() Lastly, a comment about the wooden planking around the Obelisk, which served beautifully as a bench. Practical art wins.
![]() Let's move on; I'm hungry!
